About Kyoto Seika University

Kyoto Seika University is a private four-year university in northern Kyoto that integrated manga, animation, and digital media into degree-granting academic curricula. The university combines traditional Japanese visual culture and physical craftsmanship with commercial digital production across faculties dedicated to manga, design, art, and media creation.

All courses and examinations are conducted in Japanese, and international applicants must demonstrate language proficiency equivalent to JLPT N2.

Animation and Character Design

The Faculty of Manga approaches moving image production through structured commercial pipelines and dedicated physical performance studies.

  • Animation Course: Training begins with foundational drawing, watercolor, color theory, and movement principles before progressing to digital drawing, 3D computer graphics, and short film production. To build an understanding of bodily motion, students study physical performance methods including pantomime and traditional Noh theater. Upper-level coursework incorporates Foley, voice recording, and sound design in dedicated acoustic studios, preparing students to direct complete animated works.
  • Character Design Course: Emphasizes commercial asset creation for games, animation, and print media. Students translate two-dimensional illustrations into three dimensions by sculpting physical clay prototypes and figurines, photographing them under varied lighting to understand volume, surface form, and anatomy before refining assets digitally in software such as Clip Studio Paint.
  • Sequential and Web Media: Specialized courses in Comic Art and New Generation Manga concentrate on digital storytelling, audience engagement metrics, and web-native formats including vertical-scrolling comics.

Interactive Design and Digital Arts

Digital art and interactive media tracks bridge fine arts, motion design, and software-driven experiences.

  • Digital Creation: Focuses on interactive media, game design, and user interface concepts. Projects involve virtual reality motion design, spatial computing assets, and augmented reality applications created in partnership with cultural institutions such as the Kyoto International Manga Museum.
  • Video & Media Arts: Housed within the Faculty of Art, this track explores art animation, video installations, projection mapping, and short films. Practical instruction covers Autodesk 3ds Max for 3DCG, Clip Studio Paint for 2D animation, and Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects for compositing and editing.
  • Media Creation and Sound: Offers training in software programming, interactive media design, and audio creation, with coursework dedicated to video game sound design, synthesis, and procedural audio environments.

Production Facilities and Campus Resources

Set across a 200,000-square-meter campus in the Iwakura district, the university provides specialized production environments alongside downtown exhibition spaces.

Campus facilities include a 32-seat digital editing Mac lab, multi-purpose studios convertible into darkrooms for stop-motion and puppet animation, sound-recording suites for post-synchronization and Foley, and specialized printmaking workshops in Taiho-kan for silkscreen and lithography. Exhibition and archival resources include the Joho-kan media library, Gallery Terra-S in the Meiso-kan building, the downtown satellite gallery and shop kara-S at Shijo Karasuma, and the co-managed Kyoto International Manga Museum.
