About Korea National University of Arts
Established as South Korea's national arts conservatory, the Korea National University of Arts operates on a specialized studio model that bypasses general liberal arts requirements in favor of immediate immersion in creative production. Creative media disciplines are centered within the School of Film, TV & Multimedia at the Seokgwan-dong campus in Seoul, where technical training is closely aligned with commercial studio workflows.
Animation
The Department of Animation structures its curriculum around a mandatory annual production cycle. Students conceptualize, direct, and deliver a completed animated short each academic year, concluding with a public showcase held every November. Technical progression advances from traditional narrative storyboarding and 2D bitmap drawing to 3D character animation, rigging, and visual development using tools such as TVPaint, Toon Boom Harmony, Adobe Animate, and 3ds Max.
Multimedia and Real-Time Production
The Department of Multimedia focuses on interactive media, game engine technology, and spatial computing. Combining cinematic theory with interactive system design, the program trains students in real-time pipelines using Unreal Engine and Unity. Coursework covers virtual production, media facades, extended reality, and physical computing, preparing students for roles across interactive entertainment and technical game art.
Production Facilities
Instruction and project development take place within purpose-built facilities at the Seokgwan-dong campus:
- Animation Workstation Room: Dual-operating-system computer labs configured with 2D vector, bitmap, and 3D modeling packages.
- Virtual Production Studio: In-camera visual effects facility equipped with LED volumes and camera-tracking systems for live-action digital integration.
- Post-Production Suites: Dedicated Avid editing suites alongside a professional Foley studio for sound design and ADR recording.
- Main Presentation Room: High-bandwidth review space connected to the Korea Advanced Research Network for asset management and remote screening.
Collaborative Framework and Global Exchange
The curriculum emphasizes cross-disciplinary crew structures, pairing directors, animators, and sound engineers to simulate professional production pipelines on capstone projects. International engagement is supported through the CAMPUS Asia initiative, which facilitates student exchanges and joint animation co-productions with partner art institutions in Japan and China.
