About Konstfack

Established in 1844, Konstfack is Sweden’s largest public university of arts, crafts, and design. Based at the Telefonplan campus in Stockholm—occupying a 20,300-square-meter converted factory building—the institution grounds its curriculum in experimental, practice-based making that integrates traditional craftsmanship with modern digital media. Moving image and visual design courses are anchored within the Department of Design, Interior Architecture and Visual Communication.

Programs and Animation Studies

At the undergraduate level, the Bachelor's Programme in Graphic Design and Illustration requires students to move between print and screen-based publishing. The curriculum blends storytelling, critical inquiry, and technical production, incorporating moving images, motion graphics, and animated loops into visual communication projects. Practical assignments include collaborative cross-cultural projects designing synchronized animation flows across multiple monitors.

For experienced practitioners, Konstfack runs a selective, freestanding professional animation course capped at 16 participants annually. This specialized offering covers analogue and digital 2D animation, stop motion, 3D animation, motion graphics, dramaturgy, and production planning.

The two-year Master's Programme in Visual Communication emphasizes research-led, norm-critical inquiry. Students interrogate how visual media construct cultural narratives, developing self-directed bodies of work supported by individual studio spaces and structured group critiques.

Workshops and Facilities

Konstfack supports hybrid material and digital workflows through extensive workshop facilities:

  • Print and Fabrication: Studios equipped for letterpress, screen printing, and risograph work operate alongside laser cutters and 3D printing equipment.
  • Audiovisual Suites: Dedicated video editing stations support post-production and color correction, complemented by a specialized media workshop configured for film, audio, and studio lighting.
  • Computational Making: Community initiatives such as Hackerspace Konstfack provide space for creative coding workshops, where students use software like Blender for generative and procedural art.

Studies culminate in the annual Spring Degree Exhibition, an open public showcase where graduates display final installations, moving-image work, and design portfolios.
