About Jilin Animation Institute
Jilin Animation Institute (JAI) is an independent, undergraduate-level private college in Changchun, China, dedicated to animation, comics, and digital entertainment disciplines. Founded in 2000, the college organizes its educational approach around an integrated model combining academic instruction, research, and commercial production pipelines. Rather than focusing solely on theoretical coursework, students participate directly in commercial-scale intellectual properties and creative productions.
Production-Oriented Curriculum
Academic instruction is delivered through specialized branch schools, including the School of Animation Art, School of Comics, School of Game, School of Film Technology, and School of Virtual Reality. Degree offerings include bachelor's programs in animation, digital media arts, comics, visual communication design, art and technology, and virtual reality technology.
Curricula emphasize applied workflows across the digital content pipeline. Students receive instruction in industry-standard software tools, utilizing Autodesk 3ds Max, Blender, V-Ray, and Unreal Engine to build 3D assets, real-time interactive environments, and game prototypes.
Facilities and Collaborative Projects
Practical training takes place across specialized facilities, including the Jilin Virtual Simulation Animation Technology Laboratory and the 3D Interactive Technology Laboratory. These environments support technical development in procedural modeling, motion capture, and collision detection.
The college's project ecosystem enables collaborative productions between faculty and students, including the theatrically released 3D animated film series The Frog Kingdom and original projects such as Zap's Last Stand, alongside exploratory virtual reality simulations.
Events and Portfolio Development
JAI emphasizes competitive portfolio development and cross-cultural exchange. The college hosts the International College Students GameJam—a 48-hour collaborative development event bringing together domestic and international student teams—as well as the Snow Wolf Cup animation and comics competition. Student projects are also regularly exhibited at international industry festivals, including the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
