About Emerson College

Emerson College is a private institution in Boston, Massachusetts, dedicated exclusively to communication and the arts. Within its School of Film, Television, and Media Arts, the college provides project-based education for students pursuing careers in visual effects, animation, game design, and virtual production. Media production is integrated directly into the core mission of the institution, allowing students to participate in multidisciplinary creative work from their earliest semesters.

A defining element of Emerson's curriculum is the deliberate integration of analog filmmaking traditions with digital production pipelines. Students work with physical 16mm film handling and chemical processing alongside digital cinema cameras such as the ARRI Alexa 35. This approach emphasizes the practical physics of light, optics, and exposure before students transition to digital manipulation, establishing a technical foundation that directly supports digital compositing, virtual production, and visual effects.

Production Facilities and Labs

Emerson maintains specialized facilities designed to mirror industry environments:

  • XR Studio (Ansin 309): Houses an LED volume, a real-time tracked RED Komodo-X camera rig mounted on a jib, and DMX-controllable lighting. The space supports In-Camera Visual Effects (ICVFX), enabling students to render environments in Unreal Engine for live compositing and realistic environmental illumination.
  • Emerging Media Lab (Ansin 312): Features 16 Windows workstations equipped with 24-inch Wacom Cintiq Pro displays, dedicated virtual reality bays utilizing HTC Vive and Meta Quest hardware, and Depthkit capture technology. The lab supports 2D and 3D animation, game design, LiDAR scanning, photogrammetry, and volumetric video capture.
  • Paramount Sound Stage: A professional-grade soundstage with studio lighting grids and physical set spaces, configured for live-action narrative filming and practical effects integration.
  • Post-Production and Analog Suites: Includes traditional darkrooms, film splicing benches, and dedicated color grading bays running DaVinci Resolve, supporting the entire pipeline from physical film handling to final digital mastering.

Curriculum offerings also incorporate emerging digital tools through experimental coursework, such as AI in Filmmaking, where students explore generative applications including Adobe Firefly and Google VEO for concept generation, voice synthesis, and performance transfer.

Extended Study Locations

In addition to the main campus in Boston, Emerson operates a purpose-built facility on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles (Emerson LA). This center allows undergraduate students to spend a semester in Hollywood, completing entertainment industry internships while taking specialized upper-level coursework. The college also maintains Kasteel Well, a 14th-century castle in the Netherlands used for international study programs.
