About École Supérieure des Métiers Artistiques

École Supérieure des Métiers Artistiques structures its creative education around studio-style production pipelines, combining traditional artistic fundamentals with digital workflows. Originating in Montpellier in 1993, the academy prepares students for visual effects, animation, and game development through an intensive, hands-on methodology.

Traditional Foundations and Pipeline Specialization

Training begins with an emphasis on classical visual principles before introducing digital toolsets. In the flagship 3D animation curriculum, which awards an RNCP Level 7 Master-equivalent qualification, early coursework focuses on anatomy, life drawing, image analysis, art history, and the mechanics of movement. This artistic foundation supports subsequent technical specialization across the full production sequence:

  • Pre-Production: Storyboarding, visual storytelling, scriptwriting, and concept layout using Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Production: Character modeling, rigging, texturing, and character animation utilizing Autodesk Maya, Marvelous Designer, and Blender.
  • Post-Production: Visual effects simulations, digital grooming, lighting, and final compositing with SideFX Houdini, Yeti, Foundry Nuke, RenderMan, and Arnold.

Studio-Simulated Graduation Productions

The core of the advanced curriculum is the final-year collaborative short film project. Organized into co-directing teams of seven to ten students, cohorts function as self-contained micro-studios to develop, manage, and deliver a complete animated short film. Team members take on specialized responsibilities matching industry roles—such as texturing, lighting, rigging, animation, or compositing—while coordinating to maintain a unified creative direction.

Game Development and Visual Arts Pathways

Beyond 3D animation, the school delivers focused paths in real-time and print-based media:

  • Video Game: A four-year professional track guiding students through full game creation cycles, encompassing game mechanics, narrative design, interface development, code integration, and real-time engine implementation in Unreal Engine and Unity.
  • Concept Art Illustration: A three-year program dedicated to pre-production art, digital painting, and environment development using Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Blender.

Campus Network and Collaborative Facilities

ESMA operates purpose-built teaching facilities in Montpellier, Lyon, Bordeaux, Nantes, Rennes, Toulouse, and Montreal. The Bordeaux campus, situated in the Euratlantique district, covers 12,500 square meters and incorporates dedicated film sets, digital animation suites, screening theaters, and render farms alongside on-site Artémisia student housing to support team production schedules. To prepare students for international production environments, the 3D Animation program is delivered in English at the Lyon, Montpellier, and Bordeaux locations, while initiatives such as the Écoles Créatives Lab examine the practical integration of emerging digital tools and AI into creative pipelines.
