About École Georges Méliès
Founded in 1999 by Franck Petitta and situated in Orly, France, École Georges Méliès is a specialized academy focused on animation, visual effects, and cinema. Taking its name and philosophy from the pioneering illusionist and director Georges Méliès, the institution organizes its curriculum around a firm principle: advanced digital techniques must be anchored in traditional artistic craftsmanship.
Traditional Foundations and Digital Progression
Training at the academy follows a structured progression that deliberately delays full digital immersion until physical art fundamentals are mastered. In preparatory coursework such as the Applied Arts Foundation, students focus on perspective, morphology, life drawing, and volumetric modeling within the school's Anatomy Auditorium.
Initial animation studies emphasize physical movement and mechanics. Students work on traditional frame-by-frame 2D animation tables sourced from Disney Studios, developing a hands-on sense of weight, timing, and kinetic rhythm. Only after establishing these manual disciplines do students transition into computational pipelines. Upper-level coursework expands across digital 2D compositing, 3D modeling and animation, motion capture, and real-time environments, culminating in collaborative team graduation films structured to replicate production house environments.
Virtual Production and Real-Time Innovation
A major evolution in the school's facilities and curriculum stemmed from its selection under the French national investment initiative, France 2030 – La Grande Fabrique de l'Image. This funding supported the construction of a 120-square-meter hybrid virtual production stage equipped with an LED volume, green screen, a Sony Venice 2 camera, and Zeiss CinCraft Scenario tracking systems.
Leveraging this technical infrastructure, the academy established a dedicated Virtual Production Supervisor training track. Students learn to calibrate camera tracking, oversee optical integration, manage assets in Perforce, and execute in-camera visual effects within Unreal Engine, preparing operators to connect physical studio sets with real-time digital engines.
Professional Integration and Remote Mentorship
Cohort projects are guided by practicing industry artists who mentor students across rigging, lighting, compositing, and narrative design. To extend this professional coaching beyond the physical campus, the academy introduced Animation d'Excellence, a fully remote, self-paced mentorship program. Tailored for advanced artists, this curriculum concentrates specifically on acting theory, subtle pantomime, and psychological nuance in character performance.
