About École Émile Cohl
Founded in 1984 by writer Philippe Rivière and visual artist Roland Andrieu, École Émile Cohl was established on the principle that digital artistry requires a deep grounding in traditional representational art. Rather than beginning with software, the academy trains students in classical drawing, human anatomy, and physical volume before introducing specialized digital workflows for animation, video games, and visual effects.
Curriculum and Progression
The academic pathway is structured across two progressive phases:
- Foundational Studies: Over three years, students concentrate on life drawing, anatomical observation, painting, sculpture, and visual culture. This tactile foundation establishes spatial perception, draftsmanship, and volumetric understanding prior to digital abstraction.
- Professional Specialization: Over the subsequent two years, studies shift toward dedicated industry specializations, including 2D and 3D animation, video game art, concept art, storyboarding, and digital publishing. Students work within modern digital pipelines using software such as Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, Mudbox, Nuke, ZBrush, Blender, and Unreal Engine.
During their final year, students conceive and direct a major graduation project, producing animated short films, playable video game prototypes, or published artbooks.
Campus Environments
Instruction takes place across two physical learning environments in France:
- Lyon Campus: The primary 8,000-square-meter campus occupies a repurposed industrial site, providing 19 drawing workshops, a 72-station computer amphitheater, VR and motion capture laboratories, sound recording booths, and screen printing equipment.
- Angoulême Campus: Established in 2021 within renovated former cognac cellars, this 380-square-meter satellite campus specializes in storyboarding and layout, positioned directly within Angoulême's established animation and comics studio network.
Professional Integration
To bridge academic training with professional employment, the school hosts an annual job dating recruitment event that brings major creative studios and publishers—including Ubisoft, Arkane Studios, Folimage, and Dargaud—directly to graduating talent. In addition, the school's Graphein Foundation provides merit- and social-based scholarships to assist students with financial need.
