About Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design

Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD) serves as the creative faculty of the University of Dundee in Scotland. Situated within a UNESCO City of Design, the college integrates traditional artistic foundations with digital production pipelines through a studio-centric pedagogical model. The curriculum emphasizes narrative-driven work and cross-disciplinary collaboration, encouraging students to traverse traditional boundaries between fine art, design, and technical media.

Educational Approach

DJCAD students engage in a trajectory that moves from foundational exploration to specialized technical roles. The Art & Design (General Foundation) program provides a dedicated year for material exploration and critical thinking, while specialized undergraduate degrees, such as the BDes (Hons) Animation, focus on storytelling, life drawing, and character development. At the postgraduate level, the MSc Animation & VFX program provides advanced training in live-action integration, procedural effects, and simulation, supported by the college's status as a SideFX Houdini Certified School.

Facilities and Environment

Operating from the historic Crawford and Matthew buildings, the college provides individual workspaces designed to mimic professional production environments. Students utilize a variety of technical and physical resources, including:

  • Digital Labs: Equipped for node-based compositing, 3D modeling, and procedural simulation.
  • Production Spaces: Dedicated green screen and drama studios for motion reference and live-action VFX plates.
  • Physical Workshops: Facilities for traditional crafts, 3D printing, laser cutting, and industrial prototyping.

Industry Engagement

The annual Undergraduate and Masters Degree Shows serve as significant public showcases, enabling students to present their work to industry professionals. By working to professional briefs and receiving critique from visiting industry speakers, graduates are prepared for roles within the global creative sector, with alumni credits spanning major international film and television productions.
