About Digital Hollywood University

Digital Hollywood University (DHU) operates under a single-faculty structure—the Faculty of Digital Communication—designed to bridge the divide between creative arts, digital technology, and business strategy. Rather than following isolated disciplinary paths, undergraduates can combine coursework across multiple areas, including 3DCG, visual effects, game programming, animation, film production, and graphic design.

Instruction is practitioner-led, pairing technical production training with creator-focused liberal arts and international language education.

Digital Production Pathways

The university's technical tracks emphasize hands-on asset creation, engine deployment, and technical problem-solving:

  • 3DCG and Visual Effects: Students train in modeling, animation, and dynamic visual effects using Maya as a core tool alongside texturing in Substance 3D Painter and compositing in After Effects. Practical coursework covers integrating computer graphics into live-action plates for film and interactive media.
  • Game and Interactive Programming: Instruction centers on real-time game engines including Unity and Unreal Engine. Coursework integrates coding in Python, C#, and JavaScript, preparing students to script mechanics and build interactive environments.
  • Anime and Film Production: Students study visual storytelling across both traditional drawing and 3D cel-look pipelines, spanning storyboarding, cinematography, and post-production editing.

Dual-Campus Facilities

DHU divides its facilities between digital post-production and physical shooting environments:

  • Surugadai Campus: Located in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, this central site houses high-performance PC labs with dual-monitor workstations optimized for rendering and digital media creation. It also includes an MA (Multi-Audio) suite equipped with Avid Pro Tools and 4K video editing tools, as well as LabProto, a digital fabrication workshop featuring 3D printers, UV printers, and laser cutters.
  • Hachioji Production Studio: Situated in western Tokyo within a repurposed school facility, this campus provides classrooms, hallways, a gymnasium, and open grounds for live-action cinematography, set building, and practical visual effects plate acquisition.

Student work culminates in the annual DHU Degree Show, where graduating students exhibit interactive installations, game demos, visual effects sequences, and animated films.
