About Den norske filmskolen
Den norske filmskolen (The Norwegian Film School) serves as Norway's national film conservatory, operating as a specialized faculty under Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences. Founded in 1997 by the Norwegian Parliament, the institution combines intensive practical craft education with emerging production technology across two dedicated campus locations.
Educational Model and Team Workflows
The school's pedagogical approach centers on small, highly interdependent cohorts. Every two years, the institution admits just six students per specialization line, creating a close-knit production environment designed to mirror professional film and television crews. Rather than working in isolation, students in directing, cinematography, visual design, screenwriting, sound, editing, and producing continuously collaborate on practical production exercises and graduation films.
Because the curriculum relies on live-action shooting, physical studio infrastructure, and synchronized ensemble problem-solving, all bachelor's and master's degree tracks require full-time, in-person attendance.
Specialized Facilities and Virtual Production
Den norske filmskolen incorporates contemporary production techniques directly into its curriculum, bridging traditional filmmaking with real-time digital environments:
- Virtual Production: Specialized modules utilize LED volume screens and real-time rendering systems powered by high-performance GPU workstations to integrate live actors with digital backgrounds on set.
- Visual Capture and Display: Workflows incorporate techniques such as Gaussian splatting for photogrammetric environment capture, alongside color-critical OLED reference monitoring.
- Post-Production and Immersive Media: Dedicated grading theaters and specialized VR and AR laboratories support advanced post-production and experimental media projects.
Campus Distribution and Industry Transition
Study tracks are divided between two campuses according to degree level:
- Lillehammer Campus: Hosts the three-year Bachelor of Fine Arts programs, immersing undergraduate cohorts in foundational technical craft, set etiquette, and hands-on discipline mechanics.
- Oslo Campus: Located at Myrens Verksted, this site hosts two-year Master of Fine Arts programs, artistic research fellowships, and professional development courses within the capital's media and entertainment sector.
Portfolio presentation and career transitions are integrated into the final stages of study. Graduating students pitch their collaborative diploma projects at major industry forums, such as Nordic Talents in Copenhagen, presenting their work directly to Nordic producers, financiers, and broadcast executives.
