About De Montfort University
De Montfort University (DMU) delivers digital media, visual effects, animation, and game art education through its Faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities in Leicester. Tracing its institutional origins to the Leicester School of Art founded in 1870, the university bases its creative media teaching primarily within the Leicester Media School and the bespoke Vijay Patel Building.
Block Teaching Structure
A defining feature of DMU's educational model is block teaching. Rather than dividing cognitive focus across multiple unrelated modules simultaneously over a semester, students study one subject module at a time in concentrated blocks. For technical disciplines involving node-based workflows and complex toolsets, this structure allows continuous immersion in asset production, simulation, and compositing, mirroring the sprint-based schedules common in commercial creative studios.
Industry Alignment
DMU maintains formal industry partnerships and accreditations across its digital media curriculum:
- Epic Games: DMU is recognized as an Unreal Academic Partner with Gold Status, supporting coursework in real-time 3D, interactive pipelines, and virtual production.
- ScreenSkills Select: Accredits programs against current UK screen industry skills demands in visual effects and animation.
- TIGA: Validates the Game Art curriculum against professional game industry development standards.
Game Art students are also provided ArtStation Pro accounts to build industry-facing portfolios directly on the sector's primary recruitment platform.
Specialized Degree Pathways
DMU offers several dedicated creative programs covering key stages of entertainment production:
- Game Art BA (Hons): Focuses on 3D modeling, environment design, character art, and Python scripting using ZBrush, Substance 3D Painter, Substance 3D Designer, and Unreal Engine.
- 3D Animation and VFX BSc (Hons): Covers rotoscoping, match-moving, dynamics simulation, motion capture, and compositing using Maya, Houdini, Nuke, V-Ray, DaVinci Resolve, and Unreal Engine.
- Animation BA (Hons): Concentrates on 2D character animation, narrative visual storytelling, storyboarding, and life-room studies using TVPaint and Adobe Creative Cloud.
- Visual Effects and Virtual Production MSc: Focuses on in-camera visual effects, real-time cinematic environment creation, and on-set workflows using camera tracking systems and studio lighting.
Specialist Studio Infrastructure
Practical learning is supported by the £136 million Vijay Patel Building alongside specialized facilities in the Leicester Media School. Technical spaces include dedicated Cintiq labs, drawing studios, high-performance rendering workstations, green screen infinity stages, and a 3D motion capture volume. For postgraduate work, DMU houses a virtual production suite centered on a six-meter-wide LED video wall designed for real-time in-camera visual effects production.
