About Communication University of China
The School of Animation and Digital Arts at the Communication University of China (CUC) in Beijing is one of the country's primary academic centers for digital media, animation, game creation, and interactive entertainment. While the parent university dates back to 1954 as a cornerstone of China's broadcast and media education, the School of Animation and Digital Arts was established in 2001 to address the rapid development of the digital creative industries.
Educational Philosophy and Structure
The school emphasizes an interdisciplinary curriculum combining technical digital workflows with foundations in fine arts, aesthetics, and narrative theory. Students across creative pathways—including 3D animation, game art, visual effects, and digital media technology—collaborate in cross-disciplinary projects that mirror professional production environments. Fine art training and visual design precede specialized software instruction, grounding technical execution in classical composition and visual storytelling.
Degree pathways span undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs, covering creative production as well as digital content research and media theory:
- Undergraduate Studies: Focuses on core pipeline competencies across animation art, 3D animation and visual effects, game art, digital entertainment technology, and comics and illustration.
- Postgraduate Programs: Emphasizes advanced directorial craft, interactive media design, narrative development, and applied creative research.
- Doctoral Research: Investigates animation theory, industry structures, and the broader intersection of art and scientific innovation.
Production Facilities and Joint Laboratories
Instruction is supported by more than 4,000 square meters of specialized laboratories and workshop spaces designed to support end-to-end production pipelines:
- Specialized Joint Labs: Dedicated facilities include a Unity Joint Laboratory for real-time engine and interactive workflows, an Apple Joint Laboratory for post-production and motion design, and a stop-motion joint lab established with Shanghai Animation Film Studio.
- Research and Virtual Production: The Beijing Key Laboratory of Digital Animation Technology supports rendering research and algorithmic animation, alongside motion capture spaces and virtual production facilities.
- Production Workspaces: Students have access to 4K studios, digital audio recording suites, paperless animation workstations, and traditional hand-drawn animation drawing rooms.
Global Engagement and Festival Platforms
The school maintains extensive international connections, including membership in the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA) and participation in the CAMPUS Asia mobility initiative alongside Tokyo University of the Arts and the Korea National University of Arts.
Since 2005, the school has hosted the annual Aniwow! China (Beijing) International Student Animation Festival, providing an exhibition platform for international student animation, interactive media, and emergent digital art forms.
