About Clemson University
Housed within the School of Computing's Division of Visual Computing, Clemson University's Digital Production Arts (DPA) program operates at the intersection of computer science, engineering, and visual arts. The curriculum is designed to produce technical directors, graphics programmers, and digital artists who can bridge aesthetic production and technical development for the visual effects, animation, and game industries.
Degree Pathways
Clemson structures its graduate offerings into two distinct trajectories depending on whether an applicant leans toward creative production or software systems:
- Master of Fine Arts (MFA): A 60-credit terminal degree focusing on digital art production, 3D modeling, technical character animation, and visual effects compositing.
- Master of Science (MS): A 30-credit technical degree tailored for students with computing or engineering backgrounds. The curriculum concentrates on graphics system engineering, interactive graphics APIs, and pipeline tool development using languages such as C++ and Python.
- Undergraduate Minor: An introductory sequence offering foundational study in 3D graphics, Maya workflows, and visual problem-solving.
Multi-Campus Studio Model
Instruction is shared across two physical locations: the main university campus in Clemson, South Carolina, and the Zucker Family Graduate Education Center (ZFGEC) on the Charleston Innovation Campus. Teaching is coordinated across both sites using real-time streaming alongside in-person cohorts, emulating a distributed studio workflow rather than an asynchronous online model.
Facilities on the main campus at McAdams Hall include a multi-purpose production studio equipped with 21 dual-screen Linux workstations, green screen space, and a 14-camera Vicon motion capture setup. In North Charleston, the ZFGEC provides access to a virtual production stage with an LED wall, VR/AR immersion labs, and fabrication equipment such as CNC routers and 3D printers. The Charleston facility also houses the Variable Illumination Sphere (VarIS), a custom array of synchronized lights and cameras used for capturing high-fidelity facial and texture data for rendering and machine learning research.
Studio Production and Industry Projects
Practical coursework centers on team pipeline execution. MFA candidates complete the Digital Production Studio module, an intensive 12-credit project requiring teams to carry an animated piece from initial concept through final compositing. Students can also participate in external collaborative initiatives, including the 10-week DreamWorks Animation Summer Project, where student crews develop fully realized animated short films under the direct supervision of studio professionals.
