About Chung-Ang University

Chung-Ang University (CAU) integrates visual storytelling, computer science, and digital media production across its Seoul and Da Vinci (Anseong) campuses. Creative technology education spans specialized undergraduate departments and graduate research centers, combining traditional artistic production with real-time engines, motion capture, and computational media workflows.

Postgraduate Media and Animation Research

Advanced VFX, digital animation, and immersive media studies are centered at the Graduate School of Advanced Imaging Science, Multimedia & Film (GSAIM). Established in 1999 and supported by South Korea's Brain Korea 21 (BK21) project, GSAIM focuses on technical and artistic research in digital content creation.

Curriculum coursework links real-time production technology with virtual production pipelines. In initiatives like the OTT Previsualization Workshop, students navigate digital production stages using Unreal Engine, MetaHuman Animator, motion capture, and real-time camera tracking to create game cinematics and visual effects sequences. Graduate offerings include Master's and doctoral degrees covering immersive media and animation contents, AI content, entertainment technology, filmmaking, and film studies.

Undergraduate Pathways

Undergraduate applicants choose between distinct creative and technical environments:

  • Game Contents & Animation (B.A.): Based at the Da Vinci Campus within the School of Global Arts, this major focuses on visual narrative, character setup, 3D modeling, texturing, and interactive media.
  • Art and Engineering (B.A.): Located on the Seoul Campus as part of the College of Art and Technology, this program takes a software-driven approach to digital media. Backed by the national SW-Centric University initiative, studies center on semester-long team projects spanning VFX, interactive design, and virtual production pipelines.

Production and Computational Facilities

Creative coursework is distributed across specialized lab environments on both campuses:

  • Central Culture & Arts Center (Building 301): The primary production hub for GSAIM at the Seoul Campus, housing studios for film production, stop-motion animation, and immersive media art.
  • Art & Tech Open Labs: Facilities at the Seoul Campus providing access to high-performance remote rendering stations, VR and AR head-mounted displays, and 3D printing equipment.
  • Da Vinci Arts Precinct: Dedicated production spaces in Anseong supporting game development, 3D animation, and augmented reality simulation.
  • Future AX Engineering Hall (Building 205): A 17-story convergence facility under construction on the Seoul Campus, scheduled to provide dedicated GPU server infrastructure for AI-assisted rendering and big data media processing.

Students also engage with international media platforms and festivals, exhibiting work through venues such as the SIGGRAPH Faculty Submitted Student Work program, the Annecy International Animation Festival, and the Cannes Film Festival, alongside project reviews hosted via The Rookies.
