About Chulalongkorn University
Chulalongkorn University, established in Bangkok in 1917, provides multidisciplinary pathways for students preparing for careers in digital media, screen production, and interactive design. Rather than confining these fields to a single department, the university distributes its creative and digital curricula across the Faculty of Architecture, the Faculty of Communication Arts, the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, and the Faculty of Engineering.
Communication Design (CommDe & CommMA)
The university's central visual communication programs are housed within the Department of Industrial Design in the Faculty of Architecture:
- Bachelor of Fine and Applied Arts in Communication Design (CommDe): An international undergraduate program operating as an experimental design laboratory. The curriculum progresses through graphic design, illustration, moving images, digital design, and interactive media, balancing divergent ideation with practical problem-solving. Practical studio work, one-on-one tutorials, and field research prepare students for the annual Creative Walk public degree exhibition.
- Open Studios: Specialized elective workshops connecting students with industry practitioners. Recent modules provide training in Autodesk Maya for 3D modeling and rigging aimed at virtual and augmented reality environments, alongside generative art systems built using TouchDesigner.
- Master of Fine and Applied Arts in Communication Design (CommMA): A graduate research degree offering specialized tracks in Experimental Communication Design and Type Design as Research, the latter focusing on typography and visual culture across Southeast Asia.
Cinematic Arts & Digital Engineering
- Cinematic Arts: Administered by the Department of Motion Pictures and Still Photography within the Faculty of Communication Arts, this major combines film analysis with hands-on practice in directing, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, and computer-aided cross-media production.
- Software Engineering: The Department of Computer Engineering provides technical tracks emphasizing computer graphics, multimedia system architecture, and artificial intelligence, supporting the underlying technology of games and visual effects.
Specialist Facilities
Creative experimentation is supported by the FAAMAI Digital Arts Hub, an innovation center located near Chulalongkorn Centenary Park in the Samyan district. The facility features a 35-meter geodesic dome built for 360-degree interactive projection mapping and spatial audiovisual exhibitions, accompanied by an experimental digital arts studio equipped with environmental sensors, projection systems, and specialized sound-editing suites.
