About Chapman University - Dodge College of Film and Media Arts

Dodge College of Film and Media Arts operates as a specialized academic college within Chapman University in Orange, California. Located within reach of Los Angeles and the Orange County gaming and technology sectors, the college emphasizes industry-aligned practical production, continuous studio-grade facility access, and direct mentorship from working professionals.

Curriculum and Collaborative Workflow

The central undergraduate offering for digital artists is the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Animation and Visual Effects, which features dedicated concentrations in 2D animation, 3D animation, and visual effects. The curriculum pairs artistic fundamentals—including motion principles, color theory, gesture drawing, and narrative storytelling—with technical execution across industry-standard 2D and 3D applications.

Rather than isolating animation and visual effects students within dedicated computer labs, the college structures coursework around cross-disciplinary collaboration. Digital arts students integrate directly into live-action film production pipelines, handling on-set VFX supervision, motion capture, and digital compositing for student thesis projects. This structure mirrors commercial studio workflows, teaching students to navigate the entire creative pipeline from pre-visualization through physical production and final compositing.

Specialist Facilities

Students maintain 24-hour access to dedicated production environments designed to replicate commercial studio infrastructure:

  • Digital Media Arts Center (DMAC): An 18,000-square-foot facility housing 2D animation laboratories equipped with down-shooters, 3D computer labs, and a 4K stereoscopic projection screening room.
  • Virtual Production Stage: A 1,500-square-foot studio outfitted with an AOTO LED video wall, Mo-Sys camera tracking hardware, and Disguise real-time 3D media servers, training students in modern in-camera visual effects (ICVFX) and real-time engine workflows.
  • Marion Knott Studios: A 76,000-square-foot live-action production complex containing sound stages up to 5,000 square feet, a dedicated Foley stage, a 500-seat Dolby Atmos 4K theater, and 40 individual post-production editing and sound mixing suites.
  • Chapman Studios West: A 38,000-square-foot facility supporting production design and documentary work, featuring a 6,000-square-foot scene construction shop and a prop warehouse housing more than 18,000 cataloged items.

Mentorship, International Study, and Career Development

Instruction is delivered by active industry veterans and guest creators. Through the Animation Greats initiative, students receive direct portfolio reviews and project guidance from Oscar- and Emmy-winning directors and artists. The college also runs regular master classes connecting students with directors, screenwriters, and production executives.

To provide international perspective, Dodge College partners with Gobelins in Paris for a summer immersion program, where animation students spend two and a half weeks studying European animation traditions and distinct stylistic approaches. Career development is supported internally by the Dodge Career Center, run by former industry executives who assist students with portfolio refinement, showreel development, studio internships, and festival submissions.
