About CG Spectrum

Headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, CG Spectrum was founded in 2011 as a specialized online training provider focused on visual effects, animation, digital art, and game development. While originally offering non-award industry certificates, the school expanded its educational structure in 2022 by establishing the CG Spectrum Institute (CGSI). Through CGSI, the institution operates as a higher education provider delivering bachelor's degrees and diplomas accredited by Australia's Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA).

Mentorship and Studio Pipeline Model

CG Spectrum bases its training model on synchronous interaction and professional mentorship rather than static video libraries. Courses prioritize small class sizes, capping industry certificate career tracks at a maximum of four students and degree programs at fifteen, with the option for private one-on-one mentorship. Instructors are active industry practitioners drawn from major visual effects and animation studios, including Industrial Light & Magic, Animal Logic, and Weta Digital.

Feedback mirrors studio dailies. Mentors provide individualized recorded video reviews directly over project files, guiding students through technical troubleshooting, creative revisions, and asset delivery that align with commercial production pipelines.

Certified Training and Degree Pathways

The school holds official credentials as an Unreal Authorized Training Center, a Toon Boom Authorized Training Centre, and a SideFX Certified Training Provider. Core instruction covers 3D modeling, FX simulation, concept art, compositing, real-time visualization, and game programming across standard tools including Houdini, Nuke, Maya, ZBrush, and Unreal Engine.

Within the TEQSA-accredited degree programs, studies are organized into four dedicated streams:

  • Creative Concepts and Principles: History, theory, and foundational artistic concepts.
  • Industry Concepts, Processes, and Capabilities: Business practices, workflow management, and professional communication.
  • Technical and Creative Processes: Hands-on pipeline training, software mastery, and asset creation.
  • Studio Practice: Collaborative project execution and portfolio finalization.

For students seeking alternative academic pathways, CG Spectrum maintains an articulation agreement with Moravian University in the United States, enabling graduates of selected career tracks to transfer credits toward bachelor's degrees in business administration or psychology.

Physical Studio Training: GameChanger Academy

Although CG Spectrum primarily delivers its curriculum online, the institution established a dedicated physical training presence at 150 Oxford Street in Collingwood, Melbourne. Supported by an investment from the Victorian Government and delivered in partnership with VicScreen, the GameChanger Academy provides simulated production training in collaboration with local studios such as Framestore, Luma Pictures, and Princess Bento. Through its intensive training initiatives, emerging artists train on site under direct studio schedules, creative briefs, and active supervisor feedback.
