About Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia - Sede Piemonte

The Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (CSC) serves as Italy’s National Film School. While its central foundation was established in Rome in 1935, its specialized animation department, CSC Animazione (Sede Piemonte), was inaugurated in Turin in 2001 in partnership with the Piedmont Region. Based within the Film Commission Torino Piemonte complex, the academy functions as an intensive production incubator designed to bridge academic study with professional studio practice. The three-year diploma awarded by the institution holds legal equivalence to an Italian Bachelor of Arts degree (L-03 D.A.M.S.).

Studio Simulation and Curriculum Progression

CSC Animazione structures its teaching around an intimate cohort model, maintaining a close faculty-to-student ratio that mirrors the collaborative hierarchy of a commercial studio. The curriculum requires full-time, in-person attendance and treats animation as a comprehensive medium for artistic storytelling and technological exploration. Instruction emphasizes the entire production pipeline before students focus on specific technical disciplines.

  • Year 1: Establishes core artistic and technical competencies, covering cinematic language, visual storytelling, and traditional 2D animation fundamentals.
  • Year 2: Shifts to pipeline simulation and hybrid workflows, introducing 3D integration and digital compositing alongside client-facing projects.
  • Year 3: Dedicated entirely to the production of graduation short films, requiring students to guide projects through development, production, and post-production.

Applied Client Projects and Pipeline Training

Practical application under real-world constraints forms a central element of the program. During their second year, students produce broadcast-ready social communication campaigns and institutional spots for external public and cultural organizations. These assignments introduce students to formal creative briefs, delivery milestones, and iterative production feedback.

The academy is recognized as an official Toon Boom Centre of Excellence, incorporating Toon Boom Harmony and Storyboard Pro throughout its 2D production tracks. For 3D workflows and digital finishing, coursework covers Autodesk Maya, Foundry Nuke, and Adobe After Effects. All courses are led by active industry professionals and studio directors, aligning daily instruction with modern European studio standards.

Capstone Productions

Training culminates in collaborative graduation films developed by small interdisciplinary teams. Students originate and pitch concepts, subsequently directing all facets of production including character design, background art, storyboarding, animation, compositing, and custom sound design. These capstone projects provide graduating artists with a fully realized, directorially focused production portfolio.
