About Carnegie Mellon University
Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) anchors its offerings in animation, visual effects, game design, and interactive media through the Integrative Design, Arts, and Technology (IDeATe) network. Established in 2014, IDeATe operates as a university-wide interdisciplinary ecosystem rather than an isolated art department. Students from 15 academic units—including the College of Fine Arts, the School of Computer Science, and the College of Engineering—come together to study, mimicking cross-functional studio pipelines.
Interdisciplinary Pathways
Undergraduate students take specialized 45-unit minors alongside their primary degrees, blending portal courses, collaborative studios, and intensive micro-courses:
- Animation & Special Effects: Co-facilitated with CMU's Robotics Institute, this track emphasizes procedural animation, computational photography, 3D pipelines, motion capture, and technical constraints. Introductory portal courses unpack production workflows into multi-week sprints covering digital sculpture, look development, rigging, layout, and rendering.
- Game Design: Developed in partnership with the Entertainment Technology Center (ETC), this minor spans digital and tabletop game design, system mechanics, interactive narrative, and iterative playtesting using tools like the Unity engine.
- Immersive Technologies: Offered with the Department of Languages, Cultures & Applied Linguistics, focusing on virtual and augmented reality, spatial computing, and embodied media.
- Media Design: Partnered with the Human-Computer Interaction Institute to explore mediated experiences and large-scale interactive installations.
Facilities and Collaborative Workspaces
The physical hub of IDeATe is situated in the basement of Hunt Library on CMU's Pittsburgh campus. Facilities include:
- Fabrication Lab: Equipped with Epilog laser cutters, multi-array Bambu FDM 3D printers, AnyCubic DLP resin printers, and traditional woodworking tools.
- Physical Computing Lab: Geared toward hardware-software integration and interactive prototypes driven by Arduino microcontrollers.
- Media Lab and Studios A/B: Configured with black box and green screen environments for motion capture, video production, and sound design.
- Soft Technologies Studio: Designed for responsive textile work, kinetic materials, and wearable computing.
Students must complete hands-on safety micro-courses before accessing advanced equipment independently, with regular open fabrication hours supporting prototyping and capstone development across disciplines. Work culminates in campus showcases such as the bi-annual "Meet Me @" exhibition, where student cohorts display interactive installations, VR experiences, and playable games.
