About Capilano University

Capilano University's School of Animation and Visual Effects (AVFX), based in North Vancouver, delivers studio-oriented training within a public university structure. The curriculum emphasizes active industry production pipelines, drawing faculty from the regional digital media and entertainment sector.

Instruction centers around the Nat and Flora Bosa Centre for Film and Animation, a dedicated facility providing hands-on production spaces:

  • Sound Stage: An 8,000-square-foot stage with professional lighting and grip equipment for studying physical production dynamics.
  • Motion Capture Studio: A 40-by-40-foot volume equipped with OptiTrack active and passive camera systems supporting full-body, facial, and finger capture.
  • Green Screen Stage: A 270-degree, floor-to-ceiling wrap utilized for live-action compositing and visual effects integration.
  • AR/VR Capture Stage: Dedicated space equipped with wireless tools for immersive media and augmented reality projects.

Academic pathways begin with the Animation Fundamentals Citation, an intensive two-month summer program focused on traditional animation principles, character design, and portfolio preparation. Core vocational instruction is structured into two-year cohort diplomas covering 2D Animation and Visual Development, 3D Animation for Film and Games, and Visual Effects for Film, Streaming and Immersive Media. In their second year, students pursue specialized tracks such as look development, technical rigging, FX simulation, and digital compositing.

Capilano University is recognized as an Unreal Engine Authorized Training Center in Western Canada. To support flexible study and professional upskilling, the university offers fully online, part-time micro-credentials in Virtual Production using Unreal Engine and 2D Animation using Toon Boom Harmony. Studies conclude with portfolio mentoring, the production of an industry-standard demo reel, and participation in the annual AVFX Gradshow showcase.
