About Campus VFX

Originally founded in 2006 as the Lost Boys School of VFX, Campus VFX is a specialized visual effects academy headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia. Rather than offering broad film or animation curricula, the academy focuses specifically on technical roles aligned with commercial post-production studio pipelines.

Core Disciplines

Training is organized around dedicated production specializations:

  • Effects Technical Direction (FX TD): Focuses on SideFX Houdini to develop procedural geometry and physics simulations, including Vellum soft body dynamics, rigid body dynamics (RBD) for destruction, and Pyro and FLIP solvers for fluid and fire effects.
  • VFX Compositing: Utilizes Foundry Nuke to cover 2D integration, green screen keying, rotoscoping, digital paint, and 3D multi-pass compositing.
  • Digital Lighting: Employs Foundry Katana to train artists in 3D light simulation, look development, and rendering.

In addition to its primary tracks, the school provides focused foundation courses such as VFX Essentials and VFX for Filmmakers, introducing tools such as Blender and Nuke.

Studio-Style Pipeline Training

The academy operates around a synchronous, full-day mentorship model rather than self-paced video modules. Practicing industry instructors lead cohorts throughout the workday, conducting regular review sessions known as dailies to emulate the critique cycles and technical standards of commercial studios. Advanced students collaborate across disciplines, allowing FX technical directors and compositors to hand off simulation caches and compositing scripts to produce unified sequence shots.

Delivery Options

Programs are offered in person at the Vancouver campus as well as fully online. Remote students connect directly to the school's local workstations and network rendering infrastructure via remote desktop software, providing uniform access to high-performance computing hardware and production licenses. A hybrid track allows students to complete introductory coursework remotely before transitioning to on-campus studio work for final portfolio development.
