About Breda University of Applied Sciences

Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) is a government-funded institution in the Netherlands known for professional, industry-aligned education in game technology, visual effects, and digital interactive media. Founded in 1966 and operating under its current name following a 2018 rebranding, the university connects technical craft with commercial studio practice as a certified Houdini training center, an Unreal Engine Gold Academic Partner, and a member of the PlayStation First Academic Development Programme.

Studio-Simulated Project Learning

Instruction at BUas centers on Project-Based Learning, replacing conventional examinations with continuous portfolio work, team collaboration, and iterative development designed to mirror AAA studio pipelines. Students work inside the Project Lab, cultivating agile project management, multidisciplinary problem-solving, and team communication alongside technical coursework.

Undergraduate creative education centers on the English-taught Bachelor of Creative Media and Game Technologies (CMGT). Prior to enrollment, students commit to one of three specialized tracks: Visual Arts, Programming, or Design and Production. Learning is structured across intensive ten-week production blocks. In the first year, foundational blocks progress from physical board game design and arcade mechanic reconstruction in Unreal Engine to side-scrolling platformer development and full cross-disciplinary team productions.

Visual Arts and Technical Specialisms

The Visual Arts track guides students through the complete 3D digital content creation pipeline:

  • Modeling and Sculpting: Foundational asset creation using Maya for clean topology and ZBrush for high-resolution digital sculpting.
  • Surfacing and Shading: Physically based rendering texturing workflows built in Substance 3D Painter.
  • Real-Time Integration: Scene assembly, lighting, and real-time interaction executed in Unreal Engine, supported by foundational C++ architecture concepts.
  • Procedural Workflows: Node-based procedural generation, dynamic destruction, and simulation using SideFX Houdini.

BUas places strong emphasis on Procedural Content Generation across its technical art and visual effects curricula, further highlighted by hosting the annual Everything Procedural Conference to connect student research with professional industry practice.

Graduate Research and Production Facilities

At the graduate level, the one-year Master Game Technology operates under an apprentice-mentor structure. Rather than following standard lecture modules, students pursue applied research and development projects addressing practical challenges in fields such as artificial intelligence, deep learning, and virtual production.

Campus facilities support production-heavy workflows with a dedicated XR Stage, a photogrammetry studio, and an Xsens motion capture studio. Core curriculum training is supplemented by regular Guild masterclasses focusing on niche disciplines like world-building and advanced proceduralism, culminating in an annual Industry Showcase Day where students present portfolios directly to international recruiters.
