About Bournemouth University
Bournemouth University houses the National Centre for Computer Animation (NCCA) within its Faculty of Media and Communication. Established in 1989, the NCCA pioneered a cross-disciplinary curriculum guided by the principle of combining mathematical and computer science rigor with classical art fundamentals. This dual approach trains technical directors, software engineers, and specialized visual artists across the visual effects, animation, and video game sectors.
Production Facilities and Technology
Practical instruction is centered at the Talbot Campus in the Poole Gateway Building, a purpose-built facility housing specialized production environments:
- Two multi-camera television studios equipped with 4K Ultra HD cameras
- Dedicated film sound stage and green screen stages integrated with motion capture systems
- Audio post-production facilities including Solid State Logic mixing suites, Dolby Atmos surround-sound studios, and a Critical Listening analysis lab
- High-performance PC and Apple Mac computer laboratories calibrated for rendering, procedural simulation, and real-time game development
The software ecosystem spans industry-standard tools including SideFX Houdini, Autodesk Maya, Maxon ZBrush, Foundry Nuke, Mari, the Adobe Substance 3D Suite, Unreal Engine, and Unity. Technical courses emphasize backend pipeline scripting, procedural generation, and tool design utilizing C++, Python, CUDA, PyTorch, and TensorFlow.
Curricular Pathways
Undergraduate study features three-year full-time degrees with an optional 30-week industry placement:
- BA (Hons) Computer Animation & Visual Effects: Blends 3D modeling, sculpting, and art direction with foundational algorithmic thinking and procedural workflows.
- BSc (Hons) Games Design: Explores real-time art asset creation, interactive systems architecture, and ludonarrative design.
- BSc (Hons) E-Sports Digital Technologies: Concentrates on broadcasting infrastructure, tournament streaming, and competitive gaming production.
Postgraduate tracks are one-year, full-time programs delivered on campus:
- MA 3D Computer Animation: Emphasizes character modeling, rigging, look development, and creature performance.
- MA Digital Effects: Centers on live-action data acquisition, 3D modeling, lighting, and advanced node-based compositing.
- MSc Computer Animation & Visual Effects: Focuses on C++ and Python development, shader authoring, and computer graphics research and development engineering.
- MSc Artificial Intelligence for Media & MSc Human Centred AI for Games Development: Integrates deep learning architectures into creative media pipelines and interactive games design.
Studio Simulation and Industry Connection
A signature component of the curriculum is the interdisciplinary Group Project & Industry Brief, which requires students across different disciplines—such as technical directors, animators, and compositors—to collaborate within a simulated studio production pipeline under external deadlines. The university hosts the annual BFX Festival, bringing international industry practitioners to campus for masterclasses and recruitment, and culminates the academic year with industry showcase presentations to commercial studios in London.
