About Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra
Established under the University Grants Commission's Innovative Scheme in 2004 at the Noida campus and expanded to Jaipur in 2005, the Department of Animation and Multimedia at Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra combines technical engineering foundations with creative production. Locating these programs in Noida and Jaipur positions students close to major media hubs, broadcasting networks, and production houses.
Curriculum and Teaching Philosophy
Instruction begins with analog art practices before transitioning into digital production pipelines. Early coursework emphasizes life drawing, clay modeling, puppet fabrication, and paper cutouts to ground students in anatomy, physics, and storytelling prior to software instruction.
Aligned with India's National Education Policy framework, undergraduate offerings include a three-year B.Sc. in Animation & Multimedia covering 2D and 3D animation, visual effects, and web design, as well as a four-year Honours pathway dedicated to specialized research and portfolio development. The department also offers a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Visual Communication focused on UI/UX, graphic design, and digital media, while the Jaipur campus hosts a two-year M.Sc. in Animation Design centered on advanced studio pipelines and design leadership.
Studio Facilities
Practical coursework is supported across specialized spaces designed to mirror production environments:
- Traditional 2D Labs: Outfitted with more than 40 light boxes, line-testing setups, articulated mannequins, and anatomical study models for classical animation and storyboarding.
- Digital Production Suites: Equipped with Intel Core i7 workstations maintaining a 1:1 student-to-workstation ratio alongside Wacom drawing tablets for 3D modeling, digital sculpting, and game engine development.
- Live-Action Studios: Configured with lighting grids, DSLR camera packages, and blue and green screen cycloramas for cinematography, reference recording, and visual effects compositing.
Practical Production Projects
Students gain industry experience by contributing to commissioned public-sector projects rather than working strictly from classroom assignments. Production initiatives have included creating educational animated short films, instructional comics, and awareness videos for organizations such as the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and the Health Ministry, giving students direct experience with formal project guidelines and delivery schedules.
