About Arts Academy at Turku University of Applied Sciences
The Arts Academy at Turku University of Applied Sciences (Turku UAS) operates as a specialized, multidisciplinary creative community within one of Finland's largest higher education institutions. The academy integrates education in performing arts, visual arts, music, and media. A core element of its identity is the application of "innovation pedagogy," a framework that binds academic theory with active Research, Development, and Innovation projects and corporate commissions to ensure students engage with the creative sector throughout their studies.
Pedagogical Approach and Facilities
Students benefit from a blend of traditional artistic fundamentals and professional production workflows. The academy's primary hub, the Linnankatu Arts Campus, is an architectural adaptation of a 1928 shipbuilding hall and a 1934 rope factory. This facility houses specialized venues including the Köysiteatteri (Rope Theatre), Sigyn Hall, and various studios for painting, graphics, and media editing. Media students also utilize the university's Kupittaa Campus, anchoring the academy within Turku’s broader science and business ecosystem.
Experiential Learning
The academy emphasizes experiential, project-based learning. For media students, the "Media Space" operates as a simulated marketing and communications agency, allowing interdisciplinary teams to execute genuine client mandates under faculty mentorship. The flagship four-year Bachelor of Culture and Arts in Animation program follows a holistic pipeline approach, moving from foundational cinematic thinking and storytelling in the early years to advanced industry-mirrored production in the final thesis year.
