About ARTFX
ARTFX is an independent higher education institution specializing in visual effects, 3D and 2D animation, and video game development. Founded in Montpellier in 2004 by digital effects pioneer Gilbert Kiner, the school was designed to bridge traditional arts instruction with the high-pressure technical requirements of international digital production studios. Its structural independence allows ARTFX to adapt its curriculum directly to modern studio pipelines.
Training Approach
The curriculum follows a five-year progression leading to Master-level qualifications (recognized in France as RNCP Level 7). The training model emphasizes collaboration over internal competition, simulating commercial production workflows where multiple creative disciplines intersect.
- Foundational Fine Arts: Students spend foundational years developing analog skills in anatomy, life drawing, photography, and sculpture before progressing to advanced digital workflows, procedural tools, and real-time engines.
- Studio-Simulated Capstones: In their final year, students form cross-disciplinary teams—combining concept artists, animators, effects artists, and programmers—to produce complete short films or playable game prototypes under production deadlines.
- Industry Evaluation: Capstone teams present their completed graduation films and game prototypes directly to juries of active professionals from major international studios such as Framestore, DNEG, and Cinesite.
- Technical Direction: The specialized ARTCODE pathway prepares technical directors and R&D engineers, teaching programming languages such as C++ and Python alongside game engines to develop pipeline tools, custom simulations, and render farm optimizations.
Campus Facilities
ARTFX operates dedicated teaching sites designed to mirror professional production environments:
- Montpellier: The original 3,500-square-meter campus houses specialized digital computer labs, audio mixing suites, and a private screening room.
- Lille - EuraCreative (Tourcoing): A 6,000-square-meter facility featuring a 400-square-meter film shooting studio equipped with cyclorama green screens, camera cranes, motion capture systems, and professional lighting grids for live-action VFX integration.
- Paris - Enghien-les-Bains: A boutique campus situated in a UNESCO creative city for digital arts, focused specifically on 3D animation and visual effects training.
- London: Developed in partnership with Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) and located in Shoreditch alongside The Yard VFX and the Visual Effects Society (VES) London Section headquarters, this site provides Master's students with direct access to the UK visual effects industry.
