About ArtEZ University of the Arts

ArtEZ University of the Arts approaches animation, film, and media art through an emphasis on autonomous authorship, artistic research, and conceptual experimentation. Rather than functioning as a software-centric pipeline academy, the university trains creators to treat digital tools as flexible instruments serving a primary directorial vision, encouraging students to develop a distinct visual language across disciplines.

Campus Pathways

  • Animation Design (Zwolle): Based at the Zwolle campus, this bachelor's degree prepares students to operate simultaneously as artists, animators, and directors. Practical workshops cover two-dimensional computer animation, stop motion, and virtual reality in dedicated studio spaces. Collaborative initiatives such as Winterlab and Summerlab unite animation students with peers in comic design, illustration, and theatre to break down creative silos.
  • Moving Image (Enschede): Situated at the AKI ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design, this program offers an experimental alternative to conventional film education. It deliberately moves away from rigid crew hierarchies—such as separating directing, camera work, and editing—training makers to manage the full conceptual lifecycle across single-channel films, docu-fiction, interactive installations, and virtual spaces.
  • Crossmedia Design (Enschede): Blending animation, motion graphics, typography, and interactive media, this pathway centers on practical application within an in-house design studio. Students work on external commissions alongside active practitioners and have access to experimental facilities like the BioLab.
  • Composition for Film and Theatre (Arnhem): Tailored to scoring and sound design, this program operates as a hybrid course combining remote study with mandatory intensive project weeks on campus, enabling composers to collaborate with filmmakers, choreographers, and directors.

The academic trajectory concludes with the ArtEZ finals, an annual public graduation presentation featuring exhibitions, film screenings, and performances that introduce graduates and their work to the creative industries.
