About ArtCenter College of Design

ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, provides an intensive, studio-based educational model designed to mirror professional digital entertainment pipelines. The curriculum emphasizes iterative design, transdisciplinary collaboration, and the practical application of visual theory across interactive and linear media.

Entertainment Design Pathways

The cornerstone of digital production at the college is the Bachelor of Science in Entertainment Design, which focuses on the technical and industrial design principles behind worldbuilding rather than broad fine arts theory. The major is structured around three distinct pathways:

  • Animation: Covers both 2D and 3D workflows, advancing from foundational computer graphics mechanics to character performance, storyboarding, lighting, and compositing. Training culminates in a collaborative Capstone short film where cohorts simulate a studio environment to produce finished production shots.
  • Concept Design: Blends traditional illustration with industrial design problem-solving. Coursework covers animal anatomy, architectural perspective, vehicle and prop development, digital painting, and 3D digital sculpting to create structurally sound visual assets for AAA games and feature films.
  • Game Design: Explores game development as an integrated discipline, combining level design, user experience, and interactive narrative with programming, game engine implementation, usability testing, alternative controller design, and game economics.

Film and Motion Design

Complementing Entertainment Design, the college offers dedicated degree options in live-action and graphic animation:

  • Film: Offered at both undergraduate and graduate levels (BFA and MFA), the curriculum immerses students in directing, cinematography, and editing, requiring practical production work starting in the first term.
  • Motion Design: Delivered as an intensive track within the BFA in Illustration, this pathway operates at the intersection of graphic design, 3D animation, and cinematography, preparing artists for title sequence creation, dynamic interface design, and visual effects integration.

Facilities and Collaborative Culture

ArtCenter supports digital production through specialized computer laboratories and the Bruce Heavin Media Production Studio, an expansive facility featuring a dedicated soundstage, sound isolation rooms, and high-end post-production editing suites.

Interdisciplinary collaboration is built directly into student projects. Students across Animation, Concept Design, and Game Design routinely partner on interactive prototypes and participate in events like the Animation Jam—a 48-hour student sprint where cross-disciplinary teams take an animated short from concept and storyboards to completed animation. Instruction is led by practicing faculty connected to Southern California entertainment studios, including Disney, Blizzard, and Riot Games.
