About Algonquin College

Algonquin College is a public polytechnic institution in Ottawa, Ontario, delivering digital art, animation, and interactive media through its School of Creative and Interdisciplinary Studies. Its teaching approach treats digital software as an extension of foundational art skills rather than a replacement for them, emphasizing life drawing, body mechanics, observational training, and production discipline.

Animation Training

The three-year Ontario College Advanced Diploma in Animation is a Certified Toon Boom Centre of Excellence. Training begins with traditional, hand-drawn techniques and life drawing with live nude models to build anatomical understanding and timing before transitioning into 2D tradigital and 3D digital pipelines.

Key elements of the animation curriculum include:

  • Immersion in traditional drawing, anatomical mechanics, and layout before moving into software pipelines.
  • Instruction using a Mac-based workflow and mandatory pen display drawing tablets.
  • Specialized senior study paths allowing students to tailor graduation portfolios and demo reels toward character design, layout, rigging, special effects, or storyboarding.
  • A preparatory one-year Drawing Foundations for Animation and Illustration certificate for applicants seeking foundational portfolio development.

Game Art and Development Tracks

Algonquin College separates its game production training into two focused pathways rather than a generalist curriculum:

  • Game – Art (Two-Year Diploma): Concentrates on visual asset creation, covering 2D concept art, 3D polygonal modeling, UV mapping, texturing, rigging, and integration within real-time engines.
  • Game – Development (Three-Year Advanced Diploma): Combines programming (approximately 60–70% of the curriculum) with technical art and game design, focusing on engine architecture, C++, C#, JavaScript, and game logic.

Game Development students complete an intensive third-year capstone project that simulates a studio production cycle. Working in multidisciplinary teams of six to ten, students create and publish an original 3D game. To simulate professional production constraints, teams must create all code, art, and audio in-house without external third-party assets.

Program Portfolio Updates

Following institutional budget adjustments in 2026, Algonquin College restructured several offerings across its divisions. Within creative media, new admissions to the Illustration and Concept Art diploma were suspended for the Fall 2026 intake, with resources consolidated around core flagship programs in Animation and Game Development.
