About Academy of Media Arts Cologne
The Academy of Media Arts Cologne (Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln, or KHM) is a public art and media university in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Established in 1990, the institution avoids rigid departmental divides, organizing its core study around an interdisciplinary Media Arts curriculum that combines film, contemporary art, sound, and media theory into a unified project-driven framework.
Rather than training students exclusively for fixed commercial pipelines, KHM operates as an artistic laboratory emphasizing self-directed research, conceptual grounding, and technological experimentation. For students focusing on 3D animation, game design, and experimental media, the curriculum encourages hybrid practices that connect digital animation with creative coding, physical hardware, and spatial installation.
Study Pathways
The academy structures its primary offerings through diploma degrees alongside specialized inter-institutional collaborations:
- Diploma 1 (9 Semesters): An undergraduate trajectory that introduces foundational artistic and technical methods before transitioning into self-directed studio projects.
- Diploma 2 (4 Semesters): A postgraduate track designed for candidates with prior academic experience, structured entirely around developing an advanced artistic or technical research project.
- MA 3D Animation for Film & Games (4 Semesters): A collaborative continuing-education master's degree developed in partnership with the Cologne Game Lab and ifs, focused on the overlap of narrative cinema and real-time game engine technology.
Specialized Laboratories and Infrastructure
Digital art and interactive media operate primarily through the exMedia department, which focuses on 3D animation, sound studies, experimental code, and auteur games. Practical research is supported by dedicated workshop facilities across the academy's Cologne campuses at Heumarkt and Filzengraben, including:
- Lab.D (Laboratory for Dimensional Research): A dedicated facility investigating 3D digital technologies, virtual environments, spatial interaction, and play.
- Production Studios: Facilities that include an on-site animation studio, CG-Lab, color grading suites, and motion capture equipment.
- Maker Spaces: Prototyping workshops equipped with CNC-milling machines, laser cutters, and microcontrollers for physical computing.
With approximately 400 enrolled students and roughly a third coming from abroad, KHM maintains a low student-to-faculty ratio centered on close project critiques from faculty and visiting practitioners. Admission relies entirely on portfolio submissions and project proposals demonstrating creative aptitude.
