About Academy of Interactive Entertainment
Founded in 1996 in Canberra, the Academy of Interactive Entertainment operates as a non-profit vocational educator dedicated to games, visual effects, and digital film production. With physical campuses in Australia (Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide) and the United States (Seattle, Lafayette), alongside an online campus, AIE structures its training around real-world studio environments rather than standard classroom lectures.
Studio Emulation and Cross-Disciplinary Production
AIE's educational model relies on practical, studio-simulated pipelines. Rather than working in isolation, students across disciplines—including 3D animation, game programming, visual effects, and game design—collaborate in multidisciplinary teams. During intensive production cycles, these cohorts function as micro-studios, balancing technical asset management, interdepartmental communication, and production deadlines to build functional games and cinematic projects such as the multiplayer title Demon King and the short film Broken Pieces.
Teaching staff are recruited directly from the commercial games and screen sectors, ensuring that curriculum practices align with active production requirements. Technical instruction covers industry-standard workflows across tools such as Maya, Houdini, Unreal Engine, ZBrush, Nuke, and RenderMan, alongside programming in C++ and C#.
Virtual Production and Real-Time Filmmaking
To address the growing overlap between digital games and linear film production, AIE has integrated real-time technologies into its screen curriculum. The academy has invested in ARRI-certified LED volume stages, allowing filmmaking students to work directly with in-camera visual effects and Unreal Engine real-time rendering pipelines.
Educational Pathways
In addition to its established vocational Advanced Diplomas in Australia and Associate of Occupational Studies degrees in the United States, the institution delivers higher-education pathways through the AIE Institute. This includes an integrated Bachelor of Game Development that brings art, design, and programming specializations together within a single multidisciplinary degree.
