About Abertay University
Based in Dundee, Scotland, Abertay University has established an international profile in computer games, digital arts, and real-time visual media. The institution traces its heritage back to the Dundee Institute of Technology in 1888 and achieved university status in 1994. In 1997, it established the world's first formal degree in computer games, later earning recognition as the UK's first Centre for Excellence in Computer Games Education.
Simulated Studio Pedagogy
Teaching at Abertay departs from traditional lecture formats, operating primarily through a multidisciplinary, studio-based workplace simulation model. Rather than working in isolation, students across visual arts, game design, and programming collaborate in cross-functional teams. This structure brings 3D artists, visual effects artists, and game engine programmers together to navigate real-world development challenges, including version control, interdisciplinary communication, and asset integration pipelines.
Curricula are augmented by direct industry engagement and professional mentoring. Students graduate with functional, shipped digital media projects and interactive prototypes rather than purely speculative coursework.
Real-Time VFX and Technical Art
Abertay offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate pathways tailored to current digital entertainment workflows:
- BSc (Hons) Visual Effects for Games and Real-Time Media: Focuses on real-time visual effects, procedural generation, dynamic simulations, and engine-driven media pipelines for interactive experiences and virtual production.
- MSc Technical Art and Visual Effects: Bridges the divide between artistic execution and technical programming, preparing students to build custom pipeline tools, author advanced shaders, and optimize assets across game engines.
- BA (Hons) Computer Arts: Concentrates on 2D and 3D art production, digital sculpting, character and environment design, and real-time asset optimization.
- BSc (Hons) Computer Games Technology: Covers low-level graphics programming, custom engine architecture, physics simulation, and real-time rendering in C++ and Vulkan.
Postgraduate study also encompasses the MProf in Games Development, emphasizing collaborative team production, and specialized research programs at the master's and doctoral levels.
Specialized Infrastructure
Abertay leads the UKRI-funded CoSTAR Realtime Lab, a national research initiative centered on virtual production and convergent screen technologies. Operating specialized studio spaces at Water's Edge in Dundee and First Stage Studios in Edinburgh, this facility integrates LED volumes, motion capture, volumetric scanning, and real-time camera tracking powered by Unreal Engine.
On the central Dundee campus, facilities include the PlayStation 5 Development Lab—supported by Sony's PlayStation First initiative—alongside an Emergent Technology Centre with 5G connectivity, the ViPRE (Virtual Production Research Environment) Studio, and a Wacom Cintiq lab. Abertay is an Adobe Creative Campus and holds Houdini Certified School Partner status from SideFX, aligning procedural dynamic instruction with industry standards.
Industry Engagement and Showcases
The university maintains links with studios such as Sony, Microsoft, Epic Games, and Industrial Light & Magic. Graduating students present final honors work, playable games, and animated projects to visiting industry scouts at the annual Abertay Digital Graduate Show (ADGS). Students also test prototypes and commercial game pitches in competitive development environments such as the DARE Academy.
