About Aardman Academy

The Aardman Academy operates as the specialized training and educational division of Aardman Animations, based at the studio's Gas Ferry Road facilities in Bristol. Founded in 2013 to bridge the gap between academic qualifications and production-floor expectations, the Academy functions as a dedicated studio school. Rather than awarding academic degrees or assigning theoretical essays, training centers entirely on craft, performance mechanics, and practical workflows guided directly by working industry professionals.

Instruction spans stop-motion animation, puppet and model making, storyboarding, computer animation, and scriptwriting. Across all subjects, teaching emphasizes character performance, comedic timing, and visual rhythm. Cohorts are kept intentionally small—often capped at 38 participants—to facilitate direct weekly mentorship, live masterclasses, and detailed one-to-one video critiques from senior studio animators and directors.

Training Pathways and Formats

Curricula are arranged into tiered learning tracks that balance short skill introductions with comprehensive production training:

  • Foundation Courses: Four-week introductory modules in disciplines such as Stop Motion, Model Making, Storyboarding, and CG Foundation that introduce core mechanics and studio aesthetics.
  • Industry Training Tracks: Twelve-week intensive remote courses, including Stop Motion 1 and Stop Motion 2, focusing sequentially on biped mechanics, nuanced facial performance, lip-syncing, and audio integration.
  • Professional Intensives: Five-week specialized programs, such as Scriptwriting Professional and Stop Motion Professional, centered on focused portfolio outcomes and table reads.
  • In-Studio Residency: A 28-week flagship program hosted on-site in Bristol, guiding participants through the complete development and realization of an original short film under studio supervision.

Practical and Digital Workflows

To replicate studio conditions for remote learners, the Academy pairs industry-standard software with tailored physical kits shipped directly to students. Participants in remote stop-motion tracks receive professional biped armatures, replacement mouth shapes, clay, specialized rigging, and tools alongside Dragonframe software and dedicated controller hardware.

Digital tracks translate tactile performance principles to other production environments. The CG Foundation program utilizes Autodesk Maya, coaching students to apply stop-motion sensibilities and timing to 3D computer animation. Scriptwriting courses integrate Final Draft to develop dialogue and pacing specifically calibrated for the visual requirements of animated storytelling.
