About Aalto University
Aalto University, located in Espoo, Finland, brings together art, design, technology, and business into an integrated educational environment. Formed in 2010 through the merger of three institutions—including the historic University of Art and Design Helsinki—the university delivers creative media education primarily through its School of Arts, Design and Architecture (Aalto ARTS).
Master's in Animation
Aalto's two-year (120 ECTS) Master’s Programme in Animation is coordinated jointly by the Department of Film (ELO) and the Department of Art and Media. Designed to balance artistic direction with technical execution, the first year covers foundational areas including visual storytelling, pre-production, character design, and directing across 2D, 3D computer animation, and stop-motion. In the second year, students transition into specialized self-directed project work culminating in a Master's thesis. Aalto also participates as a partner institution in the RE:Anima European Joint Master in Animation alongside Lusófona University and LUCA School of Arts.
Game Design and Development
The university's Game Design and Development major operates as sibling degrees:
- Master of Arts (Art & Design): Emphasizes visual expression, aesthetics, 3D animation, and interactive storytelling.
- Master of Science (Technology): Centers on game systems, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, and programming.
This structure brings creative artists and technical engineers into shared production cohorts, allowing students to collaborate on interactive projects and explore topics such as level design and user research.
Cinematic Arts and Production Infrastructure
The Department of Film (ELO) provides production training across fiction, documentary, editing, sound design, cinematography, costume, and production design. Animation and media students learn film crafts within a collaborative set and post-production environment, producing projects that regularly appear at major international festivals.
Practical work is supported by dedicated campus facilities:
- Marsio Building: Opened in 2024, this facility supports digital media, XR, and virtual production. It features hybrid 12G-SDI and NDI networks, virtual reality hubs, the 4K Saastamoinen Stage, and the MAGICS research infrastructure focusing on digital virtualization.
- Marsio Cinema: A 150-seat screening room equipped with 4K laser projection and Dolby Atmos sound mixing.
- Visualization Hub: Provides a 360-degree cylindrical projection system with 9.1 surround audio for testing real-time environments in Unity and Unreal Engine.
- Väre Building: Houses adaptive physical workshops, galleries, and acoustic isolation spaces for multidisciplinary fabrication.
