Position Details
- Role: Technical UI Designer
- Contract Type: 12 month fixed-term contract (possible extension)
- Work Model: Hybrid (3 days per week in the studio: Wednesday, Thursday, and one other day of choice).
- Locations: Daresbury or Newcastle, UK.
Responsibilities
- Structure, plan, estimate, and implement features aligned with game goals, accessibility, and technical standards.
- Collaborate with engineers, scripters, UX designers, and UI artists to implement features including 2D and 3D layouts, menu logical flows, animations, AR, and HUDs.
- Use text-based languages (Python, JavaScript, or C++) or visual scripting (Unreal Blueprints or Unity visual scripting) to implement UI logic.
- Iterate on implementation based on feedback, design requirements, art, and creative direction.
- Ensure interfaces scale across different screen resolutions and maintain performance without frame drops.
- Author tools and workflows for other UI artists.
- Develop UI shaders for elements such as health bar glows, holographic HUDs, and screen transitions.
- Report to technical directors and project managers.
- Apply high attention to detail and typography.
- Maintain a collaborative, inclusive, and problem-solving mentality to debug systems.
Requirements
- Essential Skills + Experience:
- 3+ years of professional game development experience working with game engines.
- Demonstrated ability to implement UI screens, widgets, logic, and data flows in collaboration with other disciplines.
- Experience in rapid prototyping to test concept feasibility, taking ideas from start to finish with full ownership.
- Experience polishing features to AAA quality and maintaining them throughout the production cycle while promoting best practices.
- Experience with other UI systems such as Unity UI, Unreal UI, ImGui, WPF, or Qt (Bonus).
- Desirable Skills + Experience:
- Experience with engines such as Frostbite and Unity.
