Role Details
- Role: Technical UI Designer
- Contract Type: 12 month fixed-term contract (possible extension)
- Location: Hybrid working at either Daresbury or Newcastle UK sites
- Working Pattern: 3 days per week in-studio (Wednesday, Thursday, and one additional day of choice)
Responsibilities
- Structure, plan, estimate, and implement features aligning with game goals, accessibility, and technical standards.
- Collaborate with engineers, scripters, UX designers, and UI artists to implement 2D and 3D layouts, menu logic, animations, AR, and HUDs.
- Utilize text-based languages (Python, JavaScript, or C++) or visual scripting (Unreal Blueprints or Unity visual scripting) for UI logic.
- Improve implementations based on feedback, design requirements, art, and creative direction.
- Ensure interfaces scale correctly across platforms and screen resolutions while maintaining performance.
- Author tools and workflows for the broader UI team.
- Design and implement UI shaders (e.g., health bar glows, holographic HUDs, screen transitions).
- Report to technical directors and project managers.
- Maintain a high level of detail and typographic standard.
- Demonstrate a collaborative, inclusive attitude and a problem-solving approach to debugging.
Requirements
Essential Skills + Experience
- 3+ years of professional game development experience working with game engines.
- Demonstrated experience implementing UI screens, widgets, logic, and data flows in collaboration with other disciplines.
- Expertise in rapid prototyping to test concept feasibility, including end-to-end ownership.
- Experience polishing features to AAA quality and maintaining them throughout production cycles.
- Promotion of best practices within the team.
Desirable Skills + Experience
- Experience with UI systems such as Unity UI, Unreal UI, ImGui, WPF, or Qt.
- Engine experience with Frostbite or Unity.
