At Krafton Montreal, we believe in having fun while creating memorable experiences, being proud of our work, and showing respect for each other's contributions.
Job Description
As a Level Designer, you will design and deliver gameplay spaces and activities in our open world, for a third-person fantasy action game. You will turn game mechanics into engaging, readable and memorable experiences, with a constant focus on quality and iteration.
Working in Unreal Engine 5, you will collaborate closely with the design, art and development teams to create large-scale combat experiences. You will give each space its own pacing and identity, while clearly guiding the player through the action.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of levels, features and activity types, from concept through final implementation;
- Design spaces suited to large-scale combat, with mastery of layout, arena pacing, enemy placement and contrast between spaces;
- Create readable, varied combat experiences that guide player movement and support pacing, difficulty and key moments;
- Quickly prototype different approaches, test them early and evolve them based on playtests and feedback, even if it means rethinking or completely rebuilding a space;
- Adapt flexibly to production changes and take an experimental approach to keep combat experiences fresh;
- Collaborate with artists, technical designers and programmers to align gameplay intent, constraints and solutions;
- Clearly communicate design needs, risks and decisions to teams and directors;
- Use scripting tools such as Blueprints to orchestrate events, sequences and key moments;
- Contribute to the evolution of design guidelines, metrics and ways of working;
- Mentor and support fellow level designers;
- Take part in planning, scoping and prioritization of design work.
Knowledge & Skills
- Solid professional experience in level design, with one or more shipped titles or equivalent production experience;
- Excellent command of level design fundamentals, including layout, flow, pacing, readability and player guidance;
- Experience designing combat spaces, ideally for large-scale battles or complex encounters;
- Ability to structure the pacing of a fight through arena sequencing, enemy placement and contrast between spaces;
- Ability to prototype and iterate quickly, test different ideas and incorporate feedback with an open mind;
- Flexible, experimental mindset, able to adapt to change and challenge an approach when needed;
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach within cross-disciplinary teams, with the ability to present and defend design intent to leadership;
- Hands-on experience with Unreal Engine 5; Blueprints proficiency is a significant asset;
- Fluent in French (our primary working language) and comfortable working in English (used to communicate with our Korean headquarters);
- Portfolio demonstrating strong level design skills and clear design intent (playable content is strongly recommended).
