About the role

Index AR Solutions is seeking a 3D Technical Artist / 3D Generalist to join our team and support the development of custom-built augmented reality (AR) applications for real-world industrial use.

As a key member of the team, you will be collaborating closely with app developers and 3D artists to create and integrate high-quality, optimized 3D assets for real-time applications. You will leverage your expertise in model rigging and skinning, shader creation, animation, 3D modeling, and technical workflows to ensure assets are visually compelling, performant, and seamlessly integrated into Unity-based AR experiences.

OUR MISSION is to make workers safer and more capable of doing their jobs. We value teammates who communicate clearly, treat everyone with respect and dignity, and deliver excellent products and services to our clients.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with app engineers and 3D generalists to understand client challenges, technical constraints, and project goals.
  • Communicate progress and technical recommendations while incorporating feedback from engineers and stakeholders.
  • Create and maintain Unity-compatible assets, animations, shaders, and visual effects.
  • Create articulated skeletons (rigs) and animation systems for characters, equipment, and interactive assets.
  • Ensure all assets, rigs, environments, and technical systems are optimized for real-time rendering and deployment.
  • Research, develop, and implement technical art tools and solutions that improve team productivity and content quality.
  • Assist in asset performance validation, ensuring assets meet visual, memory, frame rate, and platform-specific requirements.
  • Monitor application performance within Unity and identify opportunities to improve rendering, memory usage, load times, and frame rates.
  • Use source control tools to manage assets and collaborate with the broader development team.
  • Create high-quality 3D models, UV layouts, textures, materials, and animations that meet visual and technical requirements provided by the app engineer and client stakeholders.
  • Solve technical issues that arise during development.
  • Anticipate, identify, and resolve performance bottlenecks.
  • Knowledge of mechanical constraints, pivot alignment, hierarchy kinematics, and animation setup for interactive 3D assets.
  • Experience developing and maintaining art pipelines, workflows, and technical documentation.

Qualifications and Tech Stack

  • Experience with Maya, Substance Painter, and Substance Designer for hard-surface modeling, UV mapping, texturing, and material creation.
  • Strong understanding of low-poly hard-surface modeling, texturing, and asset optimization for real-time applications.
  • Experience creating tiling textures, reusable materials, and efficient asset workflows.
  • Proficiency with Unity and/or Unreal Engine is a plus, including familiarity with Unity profiling and debugging tools.
  • Experience monitoring and optimizing application performance.
  • Strong understanding of real-time rendering, shaders, materials, lighting, and graphics optimization techniques.
  • Familiarity with scripting or automation tools.
  • Familiarity with ZBrush, Photoshop, and other Adobe Creative Cloud applications is a plus.
  • Experience with source control systems is preferred.

Job Type and Schedule

  • Job Type: Full-time, in-office salaried employee
  • Job Title: 3D Generalist (Focus in Technical Artistry)
  • Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with a one-hour lunch break
