The Senior Mission Designer leads a team of mission designers to craft moment-to-moment stories for players. Working with a co-lead, they ensure workload distribution based on individual strengths. The Mission Design team is part of the World Creation team, which includes Level Design, Level Art, Mission Design, and Lighting teams, collaborating to build cohesive and fun worlds. The role works closely with Writing to create memorable, entertaining, and polished stories.
This position reports to the World Building Director and takes additional influence from the Creative Director. Responsibilities include day-to-day management and direction of mission designers, coordinating with production to keep missions on track, and ensuring cross-team collaboration. Candidates should have skills in group management, interactive storytelling, visual scripting, and interdisciplinary negotiation, with familiarity of Borderlands-style missions and Unreal Engine. Passion for gaming, storytelling, technical implementation, team building, communication, and leadership is essential.
Duties include technical and creative mission review, onboarding new hires, mentorship, participation in marketing and promotion, including demonstrations and travel. The Senior Mission Designer fosters a positive team environment and contributes to company culture focused on creativity, profit, and happiness.
This role is based in Frisco, TX, with some remote work options within the United States available upon discussion with recruiting.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a team of mission designers overseeing creative and technical mission implementation in a AAA FPS game.
- Collaborate with the Narrative Team and Creative Director to build core narrative tent poles ensuring memorable player stories and engagement.
- Work with tools developers to build and iterate tools and processes for rapid mission creation.
- Coordinate with Worldbuilding Team leads and producers to deliver content on schedule and at high quality.
- Coordinate with Lead Mission Designer and Lead Writer to meet narrative and technical goals.
- Assist Managing Director of Design with recruiting, hiring, and onboarding new Mission Designers.
- Provide feedback, mentorship, and coaching to the Mission Design team.
Required Qualifications
- Multiple shipped AAA titles, preferably with Unreal Engine experience.
- Prior leadership, directorship, or team management experience on a AAA project.
- Prior mission or narrative design experience in a shipped AAA project.
- Familiarity and understanding of the Borderlands franchise and core mission mechanics.
- Deep understanding of modern AAA games and their narrative mechanics.
